Standing up for the millions held back by paperwork

One in three Americans has a criminal record. Even after having paid their debts, many still struggle to find meaningful employment. The complex paperwork needed to clear their records keeps millions of people from supporting their families and communities.

The Power Of Paper

To raise awareness, we built an art installation out of real legal paperwork. 38 statues representing each state that has yet to enact Clean Slate legislation. We placed these paper people where America’s most famous piece of paper was signed: in Philadelphia’s Independence Mall, in front of the National Constitution Center.

Real Results

JPMorgan Chase committed itself to remove barriers to employment for those with eligible criminal records. They changed their hiring policies, giving 10% of all new US positions to people with records, and are encouraging other employers to do the same. In the Second Chance Business Coalition, they brought 50 large private sector companies together to provide career opportunities for all. And by partnering with the Clean Slate Initiative, they actively support common-sense policy solutions and reform.
